John Carmack, founder and technical director id software, recently tweeted that Wine for Linux gaming seems like a better idea than Native ports

It is not first time Carmack has shown his support for Wine. Last year in April, he tweeted that there won't be a native client for Rage as it runs fine under Wine.
Carmack, however agrees that Steam for Linux is a great thing for the platform and hopes that there will be some big hits.
