DSA 971-1: New xpdf packages fix denial of service

Posted by Bob on: 02/14/2006 10:22 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

The Debian Security Team published a new security update for Debian GNU/Linux. Here the announcement:

Hash: SHA1

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Debian Security Advisory DSA 971-1 security@debian.org
http://www.debian.org/security/ Martin Schulze
February 14th, 2006 http://www.debian.org/security/faq
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Package : xpdf
Vulnerability : buffer overflow
Problem type : local (remote)
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CVE-2006-0301
Debian Bugs : 350783 350785

SuSE researchers discovered heap overflow errors in xpdf, the Portable
Document Format (PDF) suite, that can allow attackers to cause a
denial of service by crashing the application or possibly execute
arbitrary code.

The old stable distribution (woody) is not affected.

For the stable distribution (sarge) these problems have been fixed in
version 3.00-13.5.

For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems have been fixed in
version 3.01-6.

We recommend that you upgrade your xpdf packages.

Upgrade Instructions
- --------------------

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.
