DSA 484-1: New xonix packages fix failure to drop privileges

Posted by Philipp Esselbach on: 04/15/2004 03:06 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

New xonix packages has been released for Debian GNU/Linux

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Debian Security Advisory DSA 484-1 security@debian.org
http://www.debian.org/security/ Matt Zimmerman
April 14th, 2004 http://www.debian.org/security/faq
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Package : xonix
Vulnerability : failure to drop privileges
Problem-Type : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE Ids : CAN-2004-0157

Steve Kemp discovered a vulnerability in xonix, a game, where an external program was invoked while retaining setgid privileges. A local attacker could exploit this vulnerability to gain gid "games".

For the current stable distribution (woody) this problem will be fixed in version 1.4-19woody1.

For the unstable distribution (sid), this problem will be fixed soon.

We recommend that you update your xonix package.

Upgrade Instructions
---------------------

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the footer to the proper configuration.
