DSA 1394-1: New reprepro packages fix authentication bypass

Posted by Bob on: 10/24/2007 09:20 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

The Debian Security Team published a new security update for Debian GNU/Linux. Here the announcement:

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Debian Security Advisory DSA 1394-1 security@debian.org
http://www.debian.org/security/ Thijs Kinkhorst
October 23rd, 2007 http://www.debian.org/security/faq
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Package : reprepro
Vulnerability : authentication bypass
Problem-Type : remote
Debian-specific: yes
CVE ID : CVE-2007-4739
Debian Bug : 440535

It was discovered that reprepro, a tool to create a repository of Debian
packages, when updating from a remote site only checks for the validity of
known signatures, and thus does not reject packages with only unknown
signatures. This allows an attacker to bypass this authentication
mechanism.

The oldstable distribution (sarge) is not affected by this problem.

For the stable distribution (etch) this problem has been fixed in
version 1.3.1+1-1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in
version 2.2.4-1.

We recommend that you upgrade your reprepro package.

Upgrade Instructions
- --------------------

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.
