For the Linux newbie:
I recommend Ubuntu Linux, Fedora Core, Mandriva Linux or SUSE Linux. All 4 distros comes with excellent hardware detection and wizards.
For the advanced user:
You might want to try Slackware or Debian GNU/Linux. Debian comes also with a powerful package manager called APT and includes over 13000 packages.
