2009-07-04 06:02:45 Source: Email [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]

DotDeb has released PHP 5.3.0 packages for Debian 5.0

"Read carefully this announce from PHP.net and its links :

The PHP development team is proud to announce the immediate release of PHP 5.3.0. This release is a major improvement in the 5.X series, which includes a large number of new features and bug fixes.

Some of the key new features include: namespaces, late static binding, closures, optional garbage collection for cyclic references, new extensions (like ext/phar,ext/intl and ext/fileinfo), over 140 bug fixes and much more.

For users upgrading from PHP 5.2 there is a migration guide available here, detailing the changes between those releases and PHP 5.3.0.

Further details about the PHP 5.3.0 release can be found in the release announcement, and the full list of changes are available in the ChangeLog.

This is a great news and a big step for PHP, that gets cleaner and speedier (for example, read this benchmark of ezPublish performance boost with PHP 5.3.0)."

CentOS: Security Notice: Attempted Break-In on www.centos.org
2009-07-04 04:31:52 Source: Email [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]

A security notice from the CentOS project:

"Dear Users,

on Friday evening, July 3rd (UTC) we found a few suspicious files on the CentOS webserver. Upon investigating we found out that the files had been put there through Xoops (the CMS www.centos.org runs on) - and that this was possible due to a an administrative error which has been corrected.

As far as we can see there has been no data or binary injected into the system or taken from the system. The machine hasn't been used as a source for sending spam (in the widest possible meaning) either.

We have been able to identify the source of the attacks, but have not been able to find out if the files have been put there through a compromised user account in the Xoops system.

Although we are fairly sure that there has been no such compromise, we have enforced a password expiry on all accounts on the system.

wiki.centos.org and bugs.centos.org - though being on the same machine - have not been affected by this.

All users having an account on www.centos.org need to acquire a new password through the "lost password" system of Xoops.

We are terribly sorry for any inconvenience this might cause you and would like to apologize for that.

On behalf of the CentOS team,

Ralph Angenendt"

Interviews: An Interview With A Linux Game Porter
2009-07-03 12:18:19 Source: Email [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]

Phoronix posted an interview with a Linux game porter

"Recently on our forums, Frank Earl (who goes by the synonym Svartalf), has been seeking the input of Linux gamers as to what games they would like to see ported to Linux. Frank has been working for Linux Game Publishing for a few years porting various titles to Linux and has done work independently on bringing new software from Windows to Linux. Frank was overwhelmed by the response on our forums and it has even led to new Linux games with many other possible ports being looked into. To get his view as where Linux gaming is currently at, he has answered a few of our questions about Linux game porting, Linux gaming in general, and other questions that may be of interest to gamers and Linux enthusiasts."

Reviews: Puppy Linux 4.2 – Super Fast Linux – Quick Review and Screenshots

Tech Exposures takes a look at Puppy Linux 4.2

"Puppy Linux is a popular Linux distribution that runs on less than 128MB of Ram.

We reviewed the June 2009 release v.4.2 of Puppy Linux, which comes in a 110 MB file download from their website, or from accepted mirrors. The iso file is then burnt to CD and runs as a Live CD. After installing the Live CD into RAM, I experienced my HP Laptop (2GB RAM) run faster than I’ve ever seen with any other OS or Linux Distro."
