Ubuntu: Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 3 released
2008-07-25 18:18:12 Source: Email [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]

Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 3 has been released

"Welcome to Intrepid Ibex Alpha-3, which will in time become Ubuntu 8.10.

Pre-releases of Intrepid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 3 is the third in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Intrepid development cycle. The Alpha images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Intrepid. You can download it here:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ (Ubuntu)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ (Ubuntu Education Edition)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ (Kubuntu)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ (Xubuntu)

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mirrors for a list of mirrors.

Alpha 3 includes a number of software updates that are ready for large-scale testing. Please refer to http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha3 for information on changes in Ubuntu.

This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. For a list of known bugs (that you don't need to report if you encounter), please see: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha3

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop Hardy, have a look at the intrepid-changes mailing list:

http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/intrepid-changes

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list if you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a low-traffic list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of approved specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other interesting events.

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

SUSE: openSUSE 11.1 Alpha1
2008-07-25 18:16:27 Source: Email [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]

openSUSE 11.1 Alpha1 has been released

"openSUSE 11.1 Alpha1 is available -- but beware, this is an Alpha with very rough edges!

While testing this on a Thinkpad R51, the system didn't boot after first stage installation. We are still looking into this issue (#411937). In addition to that, the default GNOME installation will complain about a missing package (providing gnome-session-branding).

With the current bootloader issue, using the DVDs for installing is not recommended, until we have a workaround. Please try the LiveCDs instead!

GNOME: GNOME 2.23.5 Released
2008-07-24 10:01:25 Source: Email [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]

GNOME 2.23.5 Development Release has been released

"Here's the first release after GUADEC. Istanbul. It was a great place. And some people actually had time to visit the beautiful city. Or to take a turkish bath. Sounds like a cool program, doesn't it? Of course, it was not only about this -- there were tons of interesting discussions, lots of sessions around various topics, etc. But you know what? The GNOME contributors actually managed to continue hacking on their modules. Amazing. Those people never stop. I guess it shows how passionate they are! So they made changes that are now visible in this latest version of GNOME. And if you look closely, you can feel some turkish love in the air around this release! Cool stuff.

You all know what you have to do now. Go download it. Go compile it. Go test it. And go hack on it, document it, translate it, fix it.

To compile GNOME 2.23.5, you can use GARNOME (which supports users
and has additional/different modules available), or the jhbuild
modulesets (which use the exact tarball versions from the official
release):
http://www.gnome.org/projects/garnome/
http://library.gnome.org/devel/jhbuild/
http://download.gnome.org/teams/releng/2.23.5/

The release notes that describe the changes between 2.23.2 and 2.23.5 are available. Go read them to learn all the goodness of this release:

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
--------------------------

This release is a snapshot of development code. Although it is buildable and usable, it is primarily intended for testing and hacking purposes. GNOME uses odd minor version numbers to indicate development status.

For more information about 2.23, the full schedules, the official modules list and the proposed modules list, please see our 2.23 page:
http://www.gnome.org/start/unstable/

Also take a look at the abbreviated schedule reminder page at:

We hope you'll love it,

Guides: Embedding Python In Apache2 With mod_python (Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora/CentOS, Mandriva)
2008-07-22 15:25:08 Source: Falko Timme [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]

Howtoforge posted a guide about embedding Python In Apache2 with mod_python

"This tutorial shows how to install and use mod_python on various distributions (Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora/CentOS, Mandriva, OpenSUSE) with Apache2. mod_python is an Apache module that embeds the Python interpreter within the server. It allows you to write web-based applications in Python that will run many times faster than traditional CGI and will have access to advanced features such as ability to retain database connections and other data between hits and access to Apache internals."
