Even with the modified XP executable, the game fails to start for me and gives an error about the game being unable to access the com2 port.

I also used Mok's modified executable successfully (see post above).
Set up the sound for the game using the "Install.exe" in the game folder on your hard drive. For music, use "General Midi" and attempt auto setup. For sound effects ("digital card"), use "SoundBlaster" and attempt auto setup. If these options don't work for you, you can experiment with other game settings or VDMSound.
Note that you may not hear music or effects in the game initially because the volume sliders are set all the way to the left. Adjust the sliders as appropriate.
If on starting the game you get the error referred to in the post above regarding inability to open COM 2, click "Ignore," find the DOS box (the error may have caused the game to minimize to your taskbar), and restore the game to fullscreen.
