The NTL cable modem (100?120?) as used in the UK is simplicity itself to set up - you don't even need to tell the telco (NTL) that you're using linux. I suggest you do, however, to let them know that you're fine using it, and that maybe they should consider supporting it.

Make sure the installation engineer knows you want to use the ethernet connection, and NOT the USB one.

Connect it up via a known-good NIC.
