I highly recommend this product for those who are looking for a good, reliable, and easy to setup 56k modem for Linux. I've been using this particular model for ~3 years now. I have three computers in the house, each of which uses one of these (Ubuntu, Slackware, and Windows), without any problems whatsoever. Unlike the original poster, I didn't need to use any drivers at all, worked out of the box with both 2.4, and 2.6 kernels. I've used both the USB and serial models, and both work well.

The Best Data 56k V.92 USB Modem works good in 2.4 Kernels (the drivers are on the Disc), it also work in 2.6 kernel but you need to d/l them from http://www.smlink.com

This Best Data Modem uses Smartlink drivers and when you install it in the 2.4 kernel you will need kernel-doc & kernel-source of your version of the 2.4 kernel to sucessfully compile the drivers. If you are using Kernel 2.6 you will only need Kernel-doc but not kernel-source to compile the drivers.

Note: If you dont hear the modem dialing out that's ok because as long as it dialing the number silently your modem is working fine, also if you are using this modem on a older system is slow your performance of your system down slightly I recommend that you use the modem on a more modern/up-to-date PC.
