2008-06-18 10:21:25 Source: Email [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]
The release plan for Mandriva Linux 2009 has been announced
"Mandriva Linux 2009 comes a step closer to reality today with the unveiling of the release schedule and the technical specifications. All this information can be found on the Mandriva Linux 2009 Development page on the Mandriva Wiki. The schedule includes two alphas, two betas, and two release candidates, prior to the final release in early October 2008. The first alpha release is scheduled for June 25th - just a week away. The technical specifications are based on input from both the community and Mandriva staff, with each item assigned to a specific maintainer and given a priority level. Some of the more significant items include:
Improved boot time
Optional automatic removal of 'orphans' (no longer required packages) in the package management tools
The use of the increasingly popular and fast-maturing PackageKit and PolicyKit technologies
Improvements to the Mandriva Windows migration and parental control tools
A live distribution upgrade mode for MandrivaUpdate
A new design for the installer
Migration to KDE 4, OpenOffice.org 3, and Firefox 3"

Just like the KDE and GNOME versions of One, this is an installable live CD edition of Mandriva Linux 2008 Spring, but this time featuring Xfce as the desktop environment. As with the other One versions, three images are available, with different sets of languages on each. This is an unofficial release, but the Xfce development volunteers will attempt to address any problems or questions about this release. "

Howtoforge posted a guide about setting up virtual hosting with PureFTPd and MySQL on Mandriva 2008 Spring
"This document describes how to install a PureFTPd server that uses virtual users from a MySQL database instead of real system users. This is much more performant and allows to have thousands of ftp users on a single machine. In addition to that I will show the use of quota and upload/download bandwidth limits with this setup. Passwords will be stored encrypted as MD5 strings in the database."

Mandriva: Server Monitoring With munin And monit On Mandriva 2008.0
2008-02-26 16:03:02 Source: Falko Timme [ Print | 0 Comment(s) ]
Howtoforge posted a guide about setting up munin and monit on Mandriva 2008.0
"In this article I will describe how you can monitor your Mandriva 2008.0 server with munin and monit. munin produces nifty little graphics about nearly every aspect of your server (load average, memory usage, CPU usage, MySQL throughput, eth0 traffic, etc.) without much configuration, whereas monit checks the availability of services like Apache, MySQL, Postfix and takes the appropriate action such as a restart if it finds a service is not behaving as expected. The combination of the two gives you full monitoring: graphic that lets you recognize current or upcoming problems, and a watchdog that ensures the availability of the monitored services."

Mandriva: Virtual Users And Domains With Postfix, Courier And MySQL (Mandriva 2008.0)

Howtoforge posted a guide about Virtual Users and Domains with Postfix, Courier and MySQL
"This document describes how to install a Postfix mail server that is based on virtual users and domains, i.e. users and domains that are in a MySQL database. I will also demonstrate the installation and configuration of Courier (Courier-POP3, Courier-IMAP), so that Courier can authenticate against the same MySQL database Postfix uses. The resulting Postfix server is capable of SMTP-AUTH and TLS and quota (quota is not built into Postfix by default, I will show how to patch your Postfix appropriately). Passwords are stored in encrypted form in the database (most documents I found were dealing with plain text passwords which is a security risk). In addition to that, this tutorial covers the installation of Amavisd, SpamAssassin and ClamAV so that emails will be scanned for spam and viruses."
