The system would slow to a crawl once the boot process got to initializing the USB hardware. After a little googling on the net I discovered several people had similar problems and the solution is to disable ACPI/Power management. After that was done everything else worked perfectly. This system has been up and stable 24/7 for four months prior to my writing this working as a network fileserver (900G total on a SIIG Ultra ATA 133 controller) for my home.

VIA K8M800 on amd64 (1)

This product has been tested on the following operating systems: Linux other and has a average rating of 1

The last rating (1) has been submitted on 2005-03-01 12:00:00 by Abdullah Ramazanoglu running Linux other:
I'm copy-pasting below what I've entered into Linux Incompatibility list (http://leenooks.com/233)

Reason: No specs from manufacturer. There's a unichrome.sourceforge.net project for an OSS driver "via", which is included in xorg 6.7.x and up (don't know XFree situation), which in turn is included in many newer distros. The problem is that it's not 64-bit clean yet, so currently no "via" driver exist for amd-64 flavors. At least it's so with Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

Functionality (from 0 to 100% of full functionality): It works with generic "vesa" driver, at standard VESA resolutions at 60Hz. (Unaccelerated)

URL for more information: https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8208

Contact: aramazan aeT myrealbox D0T coem

Notes:
* The driver works on i386 flavor of Linux installed on a K8M800 (amd64) mainboard (amd64 running in i386 mode)
* Should check unichrome.sf.net (or the Ubuntu bugzilla entry above) occasionally for amd64 compatibility.

Recommended alternatives:
Use primarily nVidia (or as a fall back) ATI on amd64 machines. They also don't provide specs for OSS driver developers, but at least nVidia's closed source drivers work well on wide range of Linux flavors.

VIA8233A Sound Chipset (3)

This product has been tested on the following operating systems: Linux other and has a average rating of 3

The last rating (1) has been submitted on 2004-05-01 12:00:00 by Anonymous running Linux other:
Tried with RedHat 8.0 . No sound at all !!!
I installed Alsa 0.9.0rc5 rpms from freshrpms.net and i got sound now (desktop sounds ,xmms , etc ) but in games i got only something like music with noise in the midle .
Same in Mandrake 9.0 except that it haves Alsa configured by default and that Gnome desktop sounds are noisy ( Kde sounds fine ) . My conclusion are that via8233A soundchip is not fully suported right now .

VIA P4PB Ultra (3)

This product has been tested on the following operating systems: Linux other and has a average rating of 3

The last rating (1) has been submitted on 2003-05-01 12:00:00 by Anonymous running Linux other:
The label of 'No' for working under linux is a little misleading. Everything works (except maybe the sound card... I haven't tried it or researched it as I have an SB Audigy) except for the AGP northbridge. Currently the AGP northbridge is only supported under the 2.5.x series of kernel because the P4PB Ultra runs under an AGP 3.0 (8x) format... register sizes are different and the 2.4.x series kernel does not yet support the AGP 3.0 spec. Otherwise the board is great.

Note: it might *MIGHT* work if you have a video card that will force the board to reduce to 4x agp. but there's no where in the bios to set the board to agp 4x. :(
