According to a FAQ on a Toshiba website, it is not possible to access BIOS settings on the Satellite L5xxx series of laptops except by running a configuration utility from Toshiba that is a Windows program. Pressing the usual key combinations (such as F2) as the machine boots does not bring up the BIOS setup screen. You can press F12 as the machine boots to pick the boot device so you can boot from the DVD drive. However, unless someone discovers a hardware hack or undocumented feature, you can't made the machine all-Linux and have access to the BIOS settings.

A review of the L555D-S7909 model by customer Mad Cat on the NewEgg site points out that some of the hardware on this model is not leading edge.

Satellite L40-N501 (4)

This product has been tested on the following operating systems: CentOS,Ubuntu Linux and has a average rating of 4

The last rating (3) has been submitted on 2009-01-26 10:33:18 by Anonymous running CentOS:
Works mostly OK. At the time of this writing the WiFi does not work as it use a Atheros chipset not yet supported by MADWIFI. Using NDISWRAPPER did not work for me.

The Built-in card reader seems to work but sometimes intermitently would fail to read data properly. However, when I tested with a external card reader it would show the same problems.

The sound works with some weirdness in the way it assigns audio channels.

I did not test the modem.

The synaptics touch pad is awesome, tons of configurability. The i945GM graphics chip kinda sucks, but it'll run beryl well and compiz at about an 80% sweetness factor. Wireless and CD/DVD +/- RW works 100%, no coasters so far (rw media ftw!). The specialty multimedai buttons don't work, but then I never expected them to. Battery life is lowish due to the screen not dimming or light not turning off - about 1h30m. Headphone volume gets really high with the options I have in modprobe.d (very loud, i never go above about 10% vol b/c its so loud). I'm using Ubuntu 7.10. Long live OSS!

Only thing that doesn't work is the onboard WinModem, but that's pretty much par for the course these days. If you're running an older XFree than 4.2.0, you'll have to use the FrameBuffer driver as the Cyberblade driver won't work properly. You'll also need to ensure that LILO boots Linux with the framebuffer enabled and set to the correct resolution. Under 4.2.0, everything works fine, and none of this is necessary.
