I ran the "cube with cogs and gears" test and got 850 fps!! The ati proprietary driver installed seamlessly and just worked. It sits in the PCI Express x16 main slot in an Intel D975Xbx2 motherboard. The processor is the QX6700, Core 2 Quad Extreme (four cores at 2.66 GHz with 4 MB of L2 cache each). This is 64 bit Ubuntu. I would say that it cannot be overemphasized enough that a main line motherboard is imperative if you wish to see good performance from these high end OpenGL cards.

i ran
./ati-driver-installer-(version)-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Slackware/All

just running it doesn't seem to work as well after the packages were made just installed them w. installpkg fglrx-*.tgz

the newest version 9.1 doesn't work real well dri would not work i tried for a while and could not get it working, fgl_glxgears did not work at all and glxgears only reported around 700fps went back to version 8.11 works great glxgears and fgl_glxgears both report around 1500fps although the fastest fps reported w/ glxgears was over 5000fps w/ the 8.8 or 8.9 version of the drivers although for some reason the packages refused to be built under Slackware 12.2 I'm not sure why i tried building them on two different machines both running Slackware 12.2 neither worked

Nexuiz w/ everything maxed out got around 15fps but gets a decent 60 to 70fps rating with high setting if you tweak a few things and around 80 to 90fps with everything set to medium and HDR activated Prey, Savage2, Open Arena, Tremulous, and a few other games I have ran run well with either medium or high settings.
